After defining the differences between qualitative and quantitative observations, students went outside with stalks of different kinds of flowers, their science notebooks, rulers, and colored pencils to practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students offered each other hints and strategies, like \u201cif you want to think of qualitative, think of your five senses.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, \u201cQuantitative is anything with a number. It can be measurement, but you can also count.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to noting several observations in each category, students also did scientific drawings of their specimen, following &#8220;ABCD&#8221; criteria\u2014Accurate, Big, Colorful and Detailed\u2014including with labeled parts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students\u2019 discussions of their observations yielded both interesting differences in perspective as well as predictions that led to questions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWould you count these parts as petals even though they\u2019re green?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, \u201cLook, it\u2019s hollow in the middle [of the stem]! I bet it\u2019s hollow all the way up or how else would the water go there?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Look, it\u2019s hollow in the middle [of the stem]! I bet it\u2019s hollow all the way up or how else would the water go there?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Students searched for precise and figurative language to capture their observations of texture, smell, durability, shape, color, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[The leaf]\u2019s a little rough, like almost like the front of my cat&#8217;s tongue where it\u2019s not so sharp.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, \u201cAh! It goes up your nose, the smell is so strong! It\u2019s like lavender, I think.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As students build their stamina and precision for noticing objects in nature, they are better prepared to understand definitions of parts and their interactions, and also to appreciate the many observations by scientists through time who have shaped our understanding of natural systems.
