After reading some independent and some whole-class texts about the work of Civil Rights leaders, students used their budding lit analysis skills to examine a protest song, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/voices.pitt.edu\/TeachersGuide\/Unit8\/AintGonnaLetNobodyTurnMeRound%20.htm\">Ain\u2019t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me \u2018Round<\/a>\u201d. First only listening, then reading and highlighting the lyrics, students talked in table groups about what they noticed and wondered about the song\u2019s structure and meaning: \u201cI think it\u2019s about ending segregation.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, \u201cthere\u2019s actually only six words that <em>don\u2019t<\/em> repeat, look!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I think it means, I\u2019m not gonna stop the work that I started.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Students also collaboratively wrote their own protest song about civil rights for all. Starting with a \u201cword cloud\u201d brainstorm, students drafted lines that had a nice rhythm and some rhyme, deciding on a catchy tune and central message about being unified in their demand for quality education for all.
