How do you decide what to read? Our 7th graders use their teachers, their class library, their families, lists of classics, and each other. All year, they have been reading independently for homework. This week, they used their reading logs\u2014in which they note nightly progress, as well as answer short-form analysis questions\u2014to choose one book and create an artwork advertising it to others. \u201cI just thought about the main picture the book made in my mind. The boys in the book have to dig these holes and it&#8217;s super hot, and kind of terrible, and then this truck comes and delivers water\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I just thought about the main picture the book made in my mind. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Their dioramas depict setting and symbols from books like <em>Moby Dick<\/em>, <em>Maus,<\/em> <em>Solitaire, Don\u2019t Ask Me Where I\u2019m From<\/em> and many more. As they worked with clay, cardboard, sand, paper, and paint, students talked about their books.
