What strikes you most about the students at Hillbrook?

Hillbrook students have responded to the question, “How was your weekend?”  with, “Good. How was your weekend?” I am continually impressed by the genuine thoughtfulness of our students. Most of my interactions have been with third graders, and I feel eight or nine year olds really understand how we all affect each other. No matter what our age, when we demonstrate that we care about someone else, and it is felt, well, that’s pretty neat.

What is your favorite unit or project?

I love reading mythology with third graders. It seems as though all humans have questions about why we are here/what “this” is all about, and, rather than provide speculation regarding such spectacular mystery, it is fun to read what others have shared down through the age – fascinating stuff! Being a part of deep and timeless conversations fills me up.

What made you choose to teach at Hillbrook?

I came to Hillbrook 20 years ago, and I was in awe of the beautiful campus. Walking around this green, open, and inviting space was a huge selling point.

What are you most looking forward to at Hillbrook in the next few months?

I love that the days are getting longer again, and, with that, the beautiful weather beckons us to spend more time outside. When we start rehearsing for our Greek play it all happens outdoors. The excitement in the kiddos is infectious.

What is the last place you visited?

Over winter break a few friends of mine and I rented a place up in Nevada City. We did this a year ago as well.  I love how close it is, and, at the same time, I feel far away and way back in time. I love walking along the Yuba River (in which I love to swim during summer months)…Gotta love California!

We hope you enjoyed learning more about Ms. Long.
