Literature in Miniature: 7th Graders Turn Books Into Art

“Can I put like a little piece of his leg over here?”

7th Grade readers and writers this week created a diorama scene about their favorite independent read of the year, encouraging others to check it out. How do you decide what to read? Our 7th graders use their teachers, their class library, their families, lists of classics, and each other. All year, they have been reading independently for homework. This week, they used their reading logs—in which they note nightly progress, as well as answer short-form analysis questions—to choose one book and create an artwork advertising it to others. “I just thought about the main picture the book made in my mind. The boys in the book have to dig these holes and it’s super hot, and kind of terrible, and then this truck comes and delivers water…”

I just thought about the main picture the book made in my mind.

Their dioramas depict setting and symbols from books like Moby Dick, Maus, Solitaire, Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From and many more. As they worked with clay, cardboard, sand, paper, and paint, students talked about their books. After Spring Break, their scenes, and accompanying artist’s statements, will be on display, in case you’re seeking a great book recommendation.
