“One of Hillbrook’s four Core Values, “take risks” challenges us to push outside our comfort zone and try new things. Knowing that our Core Values are meant for all of us, not just children, I decided to take my own risk this year and start this podcast.” – Mark Silver, Head of School

Welcome to Remarks & Reflections, a podcast offering insights into topics that are important to the Hillbrook community and today’s conversations on education and parenting. In this episode: I was inspired to do this podcast as part of this year’s school theme: “Take Risks.” One of Hillbrook’s four Core Values, “take risks” challenges us to push outside our comfort zone and try new things. Knowing that our Core Values are meant for all of us, not just children, I decided to take my own risk this year and try this podcast.

In this episode: I am joined by our recently hired Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Gulliver LaValle. Gully is our first-ever full-time Director of DEI. The decision to create his position emerged after a number of years of discussion about how we can best meet the goal of being an intentionally diverse community that sees DEI as core subject matter. The creation of a senior leadership position signals and believes students learn best in an inclusive environment where every child has a voice.

In this episode: I am joined by Director of the Scott Center for Social Entrepreneurship Annie Makela. Annie and Secondary School Counselor Eden Maisel have been co-leading WIFTTY-  women in finance and technology teaching youth – as part of our current set of Reach Beyond Block programming in the Middle School. I have been lucky enough to join them these past few weeks as an additional collaborator.

Enjoy the content and conversations, and don’t forget to subscribe using your favorite podcast software!
