Teacher Tuesday: Get to Know All-Call Substitute Teacher Jocelyn McMahon!

Welcome back from back and to today’s #TeacherTuesday! Today, get to know on-call substitute teacher Jocelyn McMahon!

🌳What strikes you most about the students at Hillbrook?
The strong community and long term friendships. Some of these students have been in classes together JK-8th grade and it shows how they interact with each other. It’s like a Hillbrook Family.

🌳When you think about the students at Hillbrook, what’s the one thing that stands out to you?
How they think outside the box. Seeing students come up with projects and initiatives that blow my mind, and how well they follow through with their goals. I think that’s very commendable.

🌳What is your favorite unit or project and why?
Hard to say, I have been a part of many different classes, but usually anything creative and performance-related. I really enjoyed seeing the Sound Project come to life this last school year.

🌳What made you choose to teach at Hillbrook?
Originally, the 2019 8th grade musical brought me to Hillbrook, but as I continued subbing more and more and working at extended care I really came to love the community, the students and the campus. There is always a warm welcome when you arrive at work. It’s a great way to start the day.

🌳What are you most looking forward to at Hillbrook in the next few months?
Seeing how we can adapt to a different kind of learning. I miss seeing everyone face to face so much but trying to look at the silver lining, this experience has pushed us to discover new platforms of learning and teaching. I’ve become more tech-literate than I ever thought possible but still have a long way to go!

🌳What is the last book that you read?
I recently revisited one of my favorite books Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed who is one of my favorite authors. It’s an easy read, but has such great advice and offers so many perspectives. It was also recently adapted to be a play written by Nia Vardalos which I got to see at SF Playhouse in February.

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Ms. Jocelyn!
