Teacher Tuesday: Get to Know 3rd & 4th Grade Science Teacher Jenny Jones

This week, we’re highlighting Jenny Jones, 3rd & 4th grade science teacher (and Hillbrook mom)!

What strikes you most about the students at Hillbrook?
There is so much joy and play on campus at Hillbrook! From the first moment kids step onto campus each morning there is a buzz, with students skipping, playing, laughing, and connecting with contagious energy.

When you think about the students at Hillbrook, what’s the one thing that stands out to you?
The students at Hillbrook are incredibly curious and willing to try new things. I’m amazed by the questions students ask. They love taking a hands-on approach to finding answers, and when curiosity drives investigation, the learning is deep!

What is your favorite unit or project and why?
Science is so fun, there are so many! The Hillbrook Sound Project has been an incredible unit to create, refine, and teach with music teacher Kristin Engineer and the 3rd grade team. This project allows students to learn about sound through a multidisciplinary lens and students stretch their understanding through experimentation, building, research, and collaboration.

What made you choose to teach at Hillbrook?
When I tell people I teach elementary science, they’re often surprised. Having dedicated science instruction for all grades resonates with my belief that all students are innately scientific, asking questions about the world around them. The opportunity to engage students in scientific inquiry from day one really speaks to the value our school places on harnessing the inner-scientist as a catalyst for learning. I’m also inspired by my science colleagues. Their incredible talent sets a high bar for my teaching, and their support helps me be my best!

What are you most looking forward to at Hillbrook in the next few months?
We are in a very unique and unexpected time right now with our shelter-in-place, and I’m most looking forward to being back on campus with the students and teachers. The campus and community of Hillbrook is an incredible place that allows for a synergy of learning, creativity, and exploration. While distance learning has brought new challenges and taught me new skills, I can’t wait to see everyone in person!

What is the last place you visited/traveled to or book that you read?
Prior to our shelter-in-place, I was in Lake Tahoe visiting my parents. I had the privilege of growing up in South Lake Tahoe and it’s one of my favorite places on earth. I enjoy many outdoor activities – backpacking, hiking, biking, waterskiing, and in winter I love to ski. I can’t wait for the snow each winter so my family and I can head out on the slopes! We hope you enjoyed getting to know Mrs. Jones!
